Are you looking for a new MMO to play with your friends? Keep an eye out for the Age of Water launch—the game is water-filled fun and aiming for an early access launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S|X on April 18th.
Check out the Age of Water launch trailer! You can wishlist the game on Steam now.
It’s been a hot minute since we’ve heard from Age of Water, the self-described ‘aquatic adventure MMO’ from publisher Gaijin Entertainment and developer Three Whale Studio. The title was first revealed back in 2020, and now it’s ready to take the next big step—an actual early access launch on April 18th.
Along with the Steam launch on April 18th, the developers have announced the game will also be released on consoles—PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. They also state that the different platform versions of the game will be identical and the PC version fully supports console controllers.
If the Age of Water launch on April 18th feels a bit too far away, you can get a taste of the game now. The developers have released a demo covering the prologue section of the MMO’s story, Age of Water: The First Voyage, which is completely free and the progress transfers to the full game.
Want to learn more about the game before launch? Head on over to the official website.
Age of Water takes place on a post-apocalyptic Earth completely covered in water. A player assumes the role of a captain who sails through storms, participates in battles and trading, captures other people’s boats and ships or builds their own and extracts resources from the bottom of the ocean.
Age of Water’s story is great for solo play, but a player can interact with other captains, call friends to join them in difficult battles, and can participate in fully optional PvP events as well as take on PvE missions against AI-controlled enemies.
The game takes some clear inspiration from Waterworld (1995), which if you haven’t seen—it’s worth the watch. The film is basically Mad Max on water with ships instead of cars.
From the gameplay we’ve seen so far and footage from the beta tests—Age of Water looks like if Sea of Thieves was fleshed out and turned into a proper MMO. The boat customization also looks incredible, with the developers providing complete freedom to the players.
Players will be able to build boats completely from scratch or even modify existing plans. Taken from the official website: Players have access to dozens of hulls and hundreds of parts, from which they can assemble anything ranging from a small boat to a hefty vessel 30 meters long, and then install equipment, armor and weapons.
The game also promises to provide a true open world to explore with friends and meet other players—friends and foes, along with fast-paced action combat. Want to see the game in action? Check out the gameplay below from GameEdged.
The developers have also previously posted a FAQ, answering some common questions.
- Will it be possible to play Age of Water with friends?
Certainly! Age of Water is an open world MMO game where you can meet other players, add them as friends, or join a group to complete a harder task for example. It’s especially interesting to look at the boats of the players that you meet, borrow unusual design solutions, and wonder where that player got a cool deckhouse or weapon for their boat. - How will it be possible to communicate with other players?
The game will have a general text chat available, where messages in this chat can be seen by all players within a certain radius of each other. Additionally, you’ll be able to send and receive private messages, for example from players on your friends list. And in addition to chat, group players will be able to use the voice chat built into the game. - Will there be PvP content in Age of Water?
In the open world, you can find PvP events, where you’ll get a notification about the beginning each. In addition to this, there are PvP quests in the campaign plot. We’ll talk about this in more detail in a separate news post. Don’t miss it!
Age of Water is looking to be a promising upcoming MMO, and Gaijin has plenty of experience running live service titles. They’re the company behind War Thunder, one of the most successful online games, which still peaks at 100k players on Steam monthly.
