Waking up to the Dragon Quest: Your Story trailer was the best way to start my day. This was the first ever look at the movie, and I was fanboying over every moment of it. It’s no secret that I love the Dragon Quest series, its easily my favourite game franchise.
The first thing that stood out to me was the drastic change in art style, which left me thinking maybe the choice was made to appeal to the western audience? If so, it leaves me hopeful for a release overseas.
Although I am a huge fan of Akira Toryiama’s iconic art style and designs for the Dragon Quest series, I have to admit this new style looks just as amazing. It’s honestly jaw-dropping, reminding me of How to Train Your Dragon, and looks like a great blend between Japanese and Western 3D Animation.
I actually started replaying Dragon Quest V recently, so this is perfect timing. I’m definitely on the hype train. I’m currently about halfway through the game and it definitely has stood the test of time. I’m curious to see how they manage to adapt the story into a shorter movie format, but I’m hopeful!
It’s honestly surprising they’ve only now just branched out to movies for Dragon Quest, considering how big the franchise is in Japan. On that note, whilst we haven’t heard anything about an international release, I’d be surprised if it doesn’t come over considering the more western, “Disney-like” art style, and the recent push for Dragon Quest in the West.
I’m super keen for the movie and really hope it’s successful. I’d love to see more Dragon Quest movies in the future. There is so many great stories and source material to draw from in the world that would make for great cinematic experiences.
