Could this be the next big mobile game? The Witcher: Monster Slayer is an augmented reality title being developed by Spokko Games.

Spokko is a new team owned by CD Projekt Red. They haven’t developed anything in the past, but the gameplay footage looks promising.

The augmented reality scene needs a shake-up and has been dominated by Pokémon GO for far too long.

I think there’s a huge market for a proper AR RPG title, as currently there’s only Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and Dragon Quest Walk.

Wizards Unite’s RPG features are half-baked at best and an afterthought, and Dragon Quest Walk is Japan-only.

From what we’ve seen of Monster Slayer, it could be a huge success.

The Witcher is a massive franchise – especially with the success of 3, Gwent and the Netflix Series.

The gameplay looks exactly like what I’d want from an AR RPG game, with the combat reminding me of Infinity Blade.

Infinity Blade’s system is probably the best implementation of combat for a mobile game, where you swipe to attack/black.

The Witcher: Monster Slayer is definitely one of the augmented reality games to keep an eye on for this year, along with the Stranger Things title.

I’ve also noticed that Monster Slayer really nails the map design, which is important for a geolocation game. It can make or break immersion.

We’ve also seen that the augmented reality/camera mode is optional, which is a good sign for quality of life features.

I love the Witcher franchise and I’m excited to see what Spokko brings to the table when adapting the series to an augmented reality format.

Also, who isn’t excited to create and play their own witcher?

The game is already running a beta test in New Zealand on iOS with plans to include more countries in the future.
