You should read My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix

Set during the 1980s at the peak of satanic panic, My Best Friend’s Exorcism follows Abby and Gretchen as they face off against the devil and highschool life.

This book manages to capture all the fun of a great Summer horror movie whilst giving you a glimpse into the life of a teenage girl well.

I’ve never read a Grady Hendrix novel before, but the cover really caught my eye when I was browsing through the horror section at the bookstore. In retrospect, the cover captures the story really well.

If The Exorcist had been authored by Tina Fey instead of William Peter Blatty, it might have borne an uncanny resemblance to what Grady Hendrix has accomplished with My Best Friend’s Exorcism.

I couldn’t agree with this quote anymore. It’s almost as if someone got The Exorcist (1973) and decided to give it some flair. It’s creative, funny, and very loveable. It manages to be a great horror book whilst still touching on the hardships of growing up well.

Who do I recommend this book to? Anyone that is a fan of horror or slice of life. Or if you just want a fast and enjoyable read! Grady Hendrix has written this book in such a way that it is vivid, captivating, but also easy to blast through!

It is definitely well written. My biggest worry with this book is that it was going to hit you over the head with 80s references – which is a huge problem considering I wasn’t even born then!

But thankfully the book doesn’t overuse any references, which is a common trap that many 80s horror falls into. At most there are a few (popular) music references here and there.

I think the friendship and highschool drama between Abby, Gretchen and their other friends was also really well done. As well as the school system and relationship with their parents. It was well done and believable.

Whilst this isn’t the scariest book out there, it keeps you at the edge of your seat at all times. Grady Hendrix is great at building suspense. Also when the book is scary, it is scary.

This book might not be perfect, but it is tremendously fun to read! It’s also hard to put down. I was so interested, flicking from page-to-page, I finished the book within two sittings!

I loved My Best Friend’s Exorcism and it’s definitely sold me on Grady Hendrix. I’ll be keeping an eye out for more of his books!
