Haven’t heard of the upcoming Harry Potter MMO? It’s titled Harry Potter Magic Awakened, and is already out in China. It’s been dominating the charts there, and is set to release worldwide this year.
Check out one of the trailers for the Harry Potter MMO, Magic Awakened.
Magic Awakened is being developed by NetEase under the Porkey Games umbrella, and published by Warner Bros. You can pre-register for it on the official website.
It’s been out in China, Hong Kong, and a few other select Asian regions since 2021. After a year of being out in those select countries, it grossed over 350 million U.S. dollars. Amazing right?
This easily makes Magic Awakened the most successful Harry Potter mobile game, and it hasn’t even launched worldwide. So, when is it coming out?
The Harry Potter MMO was supposed to release worldwide in 2022, but was delayed.
Despite the delays, the game seems on-track for release this year. The exact reason for why the game was delayed is still unknown, but people believe there may have been issues between NetEase & Warner Bros.
Last month, on the 31st of March, it soft-launched in the following regions: Austria, Denmark, Finland, Israel, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Sweden, and Switzerland.
You can find out more about the game’s soft-launch over on the official blog announcement. Since then, social media and news posts for the game have also been ramped up.
This has people speculating that Magic Awakened will be releasing soon. Apparently, the first in-game season is also ending soon (a few weeks), so players speculate a worldwide release will happen after that.
Why are we excited about a Harry Potter MMO mobile game?
Because why not? Genshin Impact has shown that mobile games can be just as good, or even better than console-targeted titles. For example, the upcoming Honkai Star Rail (releases later this week!) looks incredible.
Magic Awakened is a very different take on the Wizarding World that we see in Hogwarts Legacy—but it’s perfect for people wanting more of a school simulator.
Where Hogwarts Legacy delivered on an open-world, 3D action RPG, Magic Awakened delivers on a cute, magical world to explore with friends.
It goes hard on the social features you see in typical MMORPG games, dressing up your character, and living out your fantasy wizard or witch life.
It also has a very interesting take on combat, with spells being “collectable cards”. The visuals are also absolutely gorgeous. It looks like something straight off of a Harry Potter book cover.
It has a very hand-drawn look to it, mixed with a touch of anime. The game also takes place after the events of the Harry Potter main novels/movies—which is an absolutely fascinating point of time to explore hands-on.
The release date of the upcoming Magic Awakened is anyone’s guess. Most people have their bets on a few weeks—but either way, you can follow me on Twitter to stay updated, and join my email newsletter.
